Let’s Watch Paint Dry: Answering the Most Frequently Asked Questions About Paint

Updated: Nov 13

Welcome to the latest edition of the Harlequin Paints newsletter! Today, we’re tackling one of the most common questions in the world of paint: how long does it take for paint to dry? It may sound simple, but the answer can vary depending on the type of paint, the surface, and the environmental conditions.

Here’s everything you need to know about drying times, curing, and how to get the best finish for your next paint project!

How long does paint take to dry

1. How Long Does Paint Take to Dry?

The most frequently asked question is also one of the most complex! Drying time depends on the type of paint you’re using:

  • Water-based paints (PVA/acrylic): These paints dry to the touch in about 1-2 hours, and then you can apply a second coat but they need 24-48 hours to fully cure.

  • Oil-based paints: Slower to dry, these typically take 6-8 hours to become touch-dry, but you should wait at least 24 hours before applying another coat.

Drying and curing times can be influenced by temperature, humidity, and the thickness of the paint application.

2. What’s the Difference Between Drying and Curing?

A paint may feel dry to the touch within a few hours, but that doesn’t mean it’s fully cured. Drying refers to the solvent evaporation from the surface, while curing is the hardening process that happens as paint reaches its final, durable state. Curing can take anywhere from 7 to 30 days depending on the type of paint.

3. How Can I Speed Up Paint Drying Time?

If you're eager to finish your project faster, here are a few tips to accelerate drying time:

  • Increase ventilation: Open windows and doors to let air circulate.

  • Use a fan: A gentle breeze from a fan can help evaporate moisture from water-based paints.

  • Apply thinner coats: Thick coats take longer to dry, so opt for thin, even layers.

  • Adjust temperature and humidity: Ideal drying conditions are a temperature between 15°C and 25°C with low humidity.

4. How Many Coats of Paint Do I Really Need?

This depends on the paint and the surface you’re working with. Typically, two coats are recommended for most surfaces to achieve a solid, even finish. However, if you’re using a high-quality paint like Harlequin’s water-based Mineral Paint , one coat may be enough to provide excellent coverage but for evenness and durability we would recommend a second coat.

5. What Is the Best Way to Ensure a Long-Lasting Finish?

To ensure your paint lasts, make sure you’re working on a clean, dry surface and using high-quality products. Harlequin Paints offers a range of eco-friendly, zero-VOC products that provide excellent adhesion, durability, and a smooth finish that stands the test of time.

Applying a clear water-based sealer or wax over your painted surface will also enhance the longevity of your finish, making it more resistant to scratches, scuffs, and wear.
